STORY:

Quentin Lee is to be congratulated for taking on several controversial issues and blending them into a novel story that works on many levels. While many writers and directors of Indie gay films focus on the downtrodden, bleak, tragic aspect of young gay lads coming to grips with their lives, few have presented stories that emphasize an element of redemption based on courage to change those things that can be changed.

Ethan Mao (Jun Hee Lee) is an 18-year-old Chinese American boy who has been working (gratis) for his father Abe (Raymond Ma) all his life in their Chinese restaurant. One evening at closing time a young man enters the negligently unlocked door and robs Ethan's cash register at gunpoint. Abe enters form the back of the restaurant and kills the robber, much to Ethan's chagrin. This results in an angry confrontation (one of many in an Asian family where the children are supposed to always obey the parents). Ethan is still mourning the loss of his mother and loathes his stepmother Sarah (Julia Nickson-Soul), a would-be actress who married Abe for money, bringing along her own son Josh (Kevin Kleinberg), a bright young man of obvious mixed genetic pool. Ethan also has a younger brother Noel (David Tran) with whom he has a warm and strong bond. Sarah discovers a gay magazine in Ethan's room, shares this with Abe, and Abe throws Ethan out of his home for being gay and shaming his family.

Ethan, bitter, homeless and without money, begins a life a street hustler, accepting his passive sexual role with older johns as a means of income. Serendipitously he meets Remigio (Jerry Hernandez), a fellow hustler and minor drug dealer who understands the life of an orphan's loneliness, and befriends Ethan and offers him shelter and affection. Ethan decides to return to his home on Thanksgiving (knowing that his family always goes out of town on that day) to take his belongings and get some cash. Remigio accompanies him and what begins as a simple entry into Ethan's empty home results in disaster as his family returns for a forgotten gift. Ethan rages against them and decides to hold them hostage until morning when Abe can send Sarah to the bank to retrieve Ethan's mother's necklace - the only memento he has of her. The crux of the story is how this tangled 'family' comes to different levels of understanding under duress and how Ethan (through this dream vs reality incident) arrives at forgiveness and finds love with the ever-supportive Remigio.

The acting is mixed but the cast engages us and allows each character to morph into something better than we expect. Both Jun Hee Lee and Jerry Hernandez bring credibility to their roles and the result is a palpable relationship which touches the viewers' hearts. While there are rough spots in camera work, in script, and in production, this is a strong little Indie film with a lot to say, dealing with positive images and debunking old prejudicial thoughts about sectors of society miscegenating into the fabric that makes our population more tolerant.

Russie : Un couple de lesbiennes va déposer une demande de mariage à la mairie de Moscou

Demain, 12 mai 2009, Irina Fyet et sa compagne, toutes deux âgées de 31 ans, déposeront une licence de mariage au bureau des enregistrements de Moscou, dont le maire Youri Loujkov avait, souvenez-vous, qualifié la Gay Pride de « satanique » et l'homosexualité d'« arme de destruction massive ».

Il s'agit de la première licence de mariage demandée par un couple homosexuel, a annoncé l'activiste gay Nikolai Alekseyev, avant d'ajouter qu'elle avait peu de chance d'aboutir. « Je suis à 99% sûr que ce sera refusé, mais la situation évoluera peut-être plus tard en Russie ». En cas de refus, le couple de jeunes lesbiennes pourrait aller légaliser son union au Canada ou en Norvège où il n'est pas nécessaire d'être résidents pour se marier, a-t-il ajouté.

Jeudi, le porte-parole de la mairie de Moscou, Sergueï Tsoï, a déclaré : « Il n'y a jamais eu de Gay Pride à Moscou et il n'y en aura jamais ». Nikolaï Alexeiev a cependant maintenu l'appel au rassemblement et ajouté que « la police et la municipalité porteront la responsabilité de toute conséquence négative du rassemblement ». Source

SPEECHLESS - that was my reaction to this movie trailer.

If you thought Brokeback Mountain was polemic, wait until you watch "From beginning to end" a film by Aluizio Abranches that talks about a relationship between two brothers that turns to be something stronger when they grow up.

It's going to be interesting to see how Brazilians are going to react to a movie that talks about incest and homosexuality.

USA : Le Maine devient le 5e État à légaliser le mariage gay !

Comme nous vous l'annoncions hier soir dans les dépêches, le Maine est devenu le 5e État américain à légaliser le mariage pour les couples du même sexe, rejoignant ainsi le Massachusetts, le Connecticut, le Vermont et l'Iowa.

Après avoir été adoptée par la Chambre des représentants et le Sénat, la loi autorisant les couples du même sexe à se marier a été signée hier par le gouverneur de l'État. Le suspens aura duré jusqu'au bout puisque le gouverneur démocrate John Baldacci s'était, dans le passé, opposé au mariage homosexuel. Après avoir signé la loi, celui-ci a déclaré : « Dans le passé je m'étais opposé au mariage gay tout en soutenant l'idée d'une union civile. Je pense maintenant qu'il s'agit d'une question de justice et d'égalité de protection face à la loi, et que l'union civile n'est pas égale au mariage (...) Je pense que signer cette loi était la bonne chose faire. »

Hip Hip !! Hourra !! :o)

Mais attention... Si les opposants au mariage gay récoltent suffisamment de signatures (plus de 55 000), ils pourront demander l'organisation d'un référendum comme en novembre dernier en Californie avec la Proposition 8.

Il reste maintenant à suivre de près l'État du New Hampshire où les choses s'annoncent plutôt bien, et aussi la décision de la Cour Suprême de Californie concernant la Proposition 8.

La alcaldía de Moscú asegura que jamás autorizará desfile de homosexuales en la capital

Moscú, 7 de mayo, RIA Novosti. Las autoridades de Moscú jamás autorizarán un desfile de homosexuales en esta ciudad, declaró hoy el portavoz de la alcaldía capitalina, Serguei Tsoi.

"Representantes del movimiento de homosexuales se proponen desfilar el 16 de mayo en Moscú independientemente de si obtienen el permiso o no y haciendo caso omiso de la opinión pública, pero que sepan que nunca permitiremos desfiles de ese tipo en la capital", dijo Tsoi.

Explicó que tales acciones tienen por objetivo no sólo destruir los valores morales de la sociedad, sino también provocar desórdenes que harían peligrar la seguridad de los moscovitas y de los visitantes de la capital.

"En primer término, ese desfile amenazaría a la seguridad de los propios participantes", señaló el portavoz.

Según comentó, es la postura no sólo del gobierno de Moscú sino también de todas las confesiones religiosas, y ante todo, de la Iglesia Ortodoxa Rusa y de las organizaciones juveniles y de veteranos", subrayó Tsoi.

"Cualquier intento de realizar en Moscú acciones no autorizadas será castigado duramente por las fuerzas del orden tal como establece la ley", advirtió el portavoz de la alcaldía de Moscú.

Desde hace años, los representantes de las minorías sexuales se proponen desfilar por Moscú, pero las autoridades urbanas siempre lo prohíben.

The website of the South African artist Moxy Hart is a mixed pleasure, but a pleasure none the less. A fun and charmingly refreshing interface leads the way to four galleries, consisting of nudes, portraits, drawings and something called the "Good Phallus". This last one is very original: mobiles made of coloured or transparent perspex, in the form of be-winged penises floating about under a peaceful cloud. Perhaps not the thing for everyone's drawing room, the artistic contrasting of the "forbidden" motive with the innocence of the object and material makes them interesting pieces of art on their own right - as well as good fun of course. As for the other sections, the drawings is not too good actually, but the nudes and especially the portraits are worth a visit. Mr Hart looks like an artist that has a lot of interesting things coming if he lets him self loose. As it is the gallery is still well worth a look.
